Mom Blog Crusade From The Living Room

Check out this great story in the New York Times. This is a story about a homemaker mom blogger and her fight for a Yemeni journalist's life. Jane Novak who knows (or at least when she started knew) nothing about Arab culture or language. She is a stay at home mom (wish I was) who has become such a popular person in Yemen that the papers sell more copies when her face is on the cover. Her outspoken blog on Yemeni affairs is banned there because the government officials have dubbed and villified her "An American Agent, A Shiite monarchist, a member of Al-Qaeda or "the Zionist Novak." She has been targeted by the Yemeni government largely because of her fight for the life and freedoms of journalist Abdul Karim al-Khaiwani. He is on trial for writing a story about a bloodbath in the northern part of the country and he is a supporter of freedom and democracy. Novak has worked hard in his defense contacting politicians from both the U.S. and Yemen, human rights activists and journalist from around the globe. She has a petition for al-Khaiwani's freedom. The penalty for his crime is usually death and the verdict is expected tomorrow. Novak and Khaiwani have become friends despite the language barrier because he wrote her to thank her for her fight on his behalf and the letter touched her so deeply it prompted her to fight further. He addressed his letter to Jane Novak the American journalist and political analyst. She didn't have the heart to tell him she was just a stay at home mom who agreed with his point of view and supported his freedom until much later because she did not want to make him lose hope. When she finally told him the truth about herself he said he became even prouder of her and her work. The story touched me a bit so perhaps it will touch you too.

"Islam's Silent Moderates"

Check out this article in the N.Y. Times. This article basically questions the claim that the majority of Muslims are moderates and that the stories we hear so often are about a small group of fundamentalist extremists who does not represent the majority of Islam. The article cites a quote from the Koran "The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication, flog each of them with 100 stripes: Let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. (Koran 24:2)" and asks how can anyone follow this verse and also show moderation when the verse and many others like it require the reader to "Let no compassion move you in thier case.... if you believe in Allah and the Last Day". Lately I am inclined to wonder the same thing. In water cooler discussions at work I have frequently heard this claim of the small group of extremists making a bad name for the majority of Islam that is apparently good. In those discussions all I can say is this..... If the majority is compassionate, understanding and moderate then why in the last few weeks have there been so many "majority sanctioned" events bringing a bad light to the Islamic religion and it's followers?

First, you have a 20 year old woman in Saudi Arabia who is kidnapped and brutally raped by several men and yet when it all comes to light in the end the woman is sentenced to 6 months in jail and 200 lashes with a bamboo cane for "mingling" with a male who was not related to her by marriage or blood. When the woman gets out of jail she will likely be killed shortly after as her own brother has already attempted to murder her because of the shame she has brought to the family.

Second, you have a 54 year old female teacher from England was sentenced to jail because as she began a reading lesson in her classroom of small children she gave them the option of naming the teddy bear involved in the lesson and the children chose the name of a much loved prophet as well as many much loved men in their country "Muhammad". What did honoring someone and something they loved with the name of a much loved prophet and man get the children? It got them the lesson of seeing how they had the power to put their teacher in jail for what was twisted into blasphemy against Islam. What a lesson to teach your second grader - immediately your child learns that if you don't do as those who preach your religion to you regardless of how much sense it makes you will be thrown in jail - and the next most immediate thing learned by these little tikes is that they have the power to take something good or that has good intent and twist it to thier will in order to punish those whom they don't like if that is what they choose to do.

Third, you have Taslima Nasreen the Bangladeshi writer who bravely defends the rights of Muslim women worldwide. And what does she get as her reward for wanting equality or at the very least non-violent, logical, and compassionate treatment of women? She gets forced out from her home counry of Bangladesh and ends up having to move to India where there is placed a price for her head of $500,000 rupees. In August she was assulted by Muslim militants in Hyderabad and in recent weeks she has been forced to leave Calcutta, and then Rajasthan. All of this shunning and ostricism for protecting a minority from blatant abuses. This shows the lengths that people will go to in order to be able to continue abuse in the name of Allah without punishment for this violence in any form because they are taught to do these things and believe these things without the consideration of compassion.

It is odd to me that a group of people of any sort whose 'religious texts' require them to obey a God only and not to consider their own thoughts and compassion would obey a book and some men reading it to them instead. This is exactly opposite of what most religious texts require. Most require that you have a personal relationship with the God and that you follow only God's instruction. I find it odd that there is anyone who has the twisted belief that to have a personal relationship with your God you have to go through a middle man interpreter. Why would they not tell you to come to church and read the word of our great prophet who received the ultimate word from God and then go home and pray and meditate and chant your brains out until you yourself receive a message and then you commit whatever acts that message told you to do. The problem with this is that those in charge of various religions can't accept this because it would remove from them two very important things 1- power; 2- money. If we all had the freedom to speak with God directly then we could come back from our private conversations with him and do the same thing as our "clerics" do and twist it to our own benefit without enduring a lot of questions because we claimed that it came from God. Clerics of any religion would pee their pants if this became widely accepted to speak with God yourself instead of with an interpreting cleric. As a matter of fact that is exactly what these clerics of all religions are metaphorically doing is peeing in thier robes. That is why in America gay people, transgendered people and those of color still don't have rights because the religious clerics are the metaphorical dogs pissing on the metaphorical tree of lawmaking in order to show their strength, power and territory. As it is said in Habakkuk 2 in the Christian bible I believe all these people who lift up their own egos while leaving their shrunken souls inside them, becoming victim to their own pride and desire to collect the control of people and countries through bloodshed and violence will eventually get their payback in such a way that makes all of the earth silent in amazement.

Another Dumb-Ass Texan

Gilberto Cantu, a Texas truck driver, has made the bone-head mistake of driving his truck through a tunnel that was too damn short for his truck despite bells-whistles-warning lights-traffic stop lights-police officers ordering him to stop on loud speakers. This guy is definitely a candidate for any upcoming Darwin Awards. What a mess!! The top of his truck was peeled like a sardine can when you open it. Who knows if any of his load was damaged but his truck sure was. Not only did he damage his truck beyond recognition and break cazillions of laws, he also damaged the tunnel forcing it to have to close down. This guy cost all sorts of money for all sorts of people. The taxpayers of the place he messed up will have to pay for that repair, the trucking company he worked for will have to pay hefty fines not to mention replace his truck, and he will likely get fired. Truck drivers every where should be mad that this one made the ranks of dumb butts in the news. Sorry to piss people off by calling Texans dumb asses but it is my duty as an Oklahoman born citizen to insult Texans at every opportunity. Gooooooo SSSooooonnners!!!!!! OOOOOOOOOOO....U!!

Is China Trying To Kill U.S.? Biological Terrorism?

Odd that all the crap that has been causing us healt problems lately has been coming from China. Dogs and cats everywhere dying in mass quantities because of tainted products coming from China. Now other products from China are tainting the U.S. consumers. Now it's toothpaste which was poisoned with something akin to anti-freeze. Check out this New York Times article about the tainted toothpaste. China is blaming Panama for the tainted products, but I figure all are to blame for this one. Whomever uses poison in their products without notifying everyone is definitely liable for something. At the very least people should have a choice of whether or not they want to use poison products. People every day insert botulism into their faces so that they will have a permanently surprised looking face, but at least they know what it is when they do it as weird as they may be for doing it in the first place. Just as Canada and the U.S. are scrambling around trying to stop tainted toothpaste from killing more of their people they intercepted corn gluten from China with more poison in it. What the hell? I'm sorry for taking the offensive leap, but things are looking a little shifty. I mean come on we all know whether we want to admit it over here in America that half the Asians could beat us out in a scholastic meet on any day we choose. We aren't the brightest bulbs when compared with the rest of the planet. Don't try to shoot me full of shit and tell me that the innocent Chinese government didn't know or is somehow stupid enough to think that a little bit of anti-freeze, some plastic products and fertilizer wouldn't make a few people sick and a whole bunch of already sick people dead. If you believe that I have a bridge to sell ya. I think that our government needs to put every inch of every thing coming into the U.S. from China through rigorous testing even if it means we have to pay a bit more for the product. At least if things are tested once a month or something then we won't have as much crap zipping across the borders, and maybe the Chinese will stop trying to kill us. In the mean time people all I have to say is don't eat Chinese made products, and before you dumb rednecks go crazy and extreme please note that I am not saying don't buy products from Chinese Americans or go to Chinese restaurants.

The Art of Money Making With a Song in Your Heart and a Blog on the Web

Check out this article. It's about a "shaggy" looking 36 year old computer programmer who somehow convinced his wife to bless the idea of him quitting his job and becoming a full time singer and song-writer. Not an easy feat for her when you consider bills, the economy and the price of fuel. He made a rule for himself that he would write and record a song each week and then post it to his blog. He stuck to his goal through all the writer's block and difficulty. He had always had a dream of being a full-time musician and figured this huge challenge would be the way to do it. Those of you who are thinking "big deal" so the guy is a full time musician consider the fact that in order to be a full time anything you have to spend all of your time doing it. This means you can't spend any of your time with some other job which makes you any sort of money or compensation. Not because it's against the rules but simply because there isn't any time. So has he become successful? Who knows? I guess that would be based on what your definition of success is. He has however made a "reasonable middle class living" at it. He pulls in between $3000 and $5000 with the CD's and digital downloads of his music on iTunes. I don't know how that compares to being an average computer programmer but I do know how it compares to what I make. I make between $1500 and $3000 a month doing what I do and only parts of it are fun and none of it is what I have ever dreamed of doing. To me if you can make the minimum it takes you to just live while doing something you've dreamed of doing most of your life then you are successful. I plan to move to LA one day and become an actress or singer. Does that mean I will be famous and have paparazzi chasing me around on the streets? Likely no. It does mean however that little children all over the country will recognize my voice when I speak because I'm the voice of their favorite cartoon character. As long as I make between $3000 and $5000 a month then I'll be happy. So kudos to this guy (Jonathan Coulton) for doing his thing and more kudos for getting published in the New York Times and being the 3rd most linked article on blogs for just today. This means that he has in one day increased his blog traffic from more than 3,000 people daily on average to who knows how many. I have to say I'm a bit jealous that I haven't spent some of the money I blow on eating out every day on some recording equipment and a few guitar lessons. I had the voice lessons in middle school.
